THIS year’s Central/Joshua Galvin Photographic Hairdressing Awards were always going to be special. For the first year a new cup, The Joshua Galvin Cup, was presented in memory of the late Joshua Galvin to someone whose worked was deemed outstanding. Now in its sixth year, the competition and Finals not only lived up to expectations but far exceeded them with amazing work produced and an electric atmosphere. Read on to find out more!
THE BACKSTAGE BUZZ
SO much goes on in the prep rooms before the stunning models take to the stage of the legendary Wella World Studio with stylists battling to contain their excitement and overcome their nerves.
We caught up with some of the competitors who were busy getting their models show ready. For lots of trainee stylists, it was the first time they had made the finals.
Dominique Rigby pix 27-31 from the Painted Lady salon in Shoreditch used boss Belinda Hay as her model in the Latest Fashion category of the competition.
With both the hair and clothes harking right back to the 1940’s and 1950’s, Dominique explained that the look was in fact bang on-trend.
“This period is really fashionable at the moment and what I have tried to do is bring a modern take to this retro look.”
Despite being a first time competitor, Dominique admitted to feeling pretty relaxed and was enjoying soaking up the atmosphere.
She was not alone in being inspired by a the rocking 50’s. Emma Jane Starr pix 32-36 from Johnpaul Wyndham Haircare in Hornchurch also used a large roll on top of the head to finish off her style. The bright pink colour blended perfectly with the rest of the hair which was a pastel lilac. A strong and dramatic look!
Moving from rock ‘n’ roll to rock chick, other competitors, including Rachel Blute pix 37-41 took their inspiration from cool lady rockers complete with spray on leather trousers, biker jackets and heels.
Rachel, from Glenn’s Room in Chelmsford was a first time finalist and loved taking part in the competition. She used her entry as a chance to practise her hair up skills, something she had never worked on before and the results were stunning.
And it wasn’t just the female models that looked great. The boys impressed too with looks ranging from cool preppy to the ever popular geek chic.
Mixing it all up was Cloe Jordan pix 66-70 from Millers in Bishop Stortford. Cloe really enjoys styling men’s hair so decided to enter the competition for the first time and naturally chose the Men’s category.
Her look combined loose curls and volume on top created with the use of a diffuser and close cut sides.
At the other end of the spectrum, past Men’s Image winner, Olli Moorhouse pix 48-54 from HOB in St Alban’s went for a clean cut, smart preppy look.
Giving your look a fresh take is always eye-catching and Jessica Winder pix 85 - 91from Secrets salons in Rayleigh managed to ring the changes with a Prom Look that was both sharp and pretty.
Jessica said: “I created a Mohican of curls on the top and pulled the hair back tight off the face to show off my models exquisite features.”
And having practised for an hour after work for the past two months, Jessica’s efforts certainly paid off.
Lots of hard work also went into the some of the fabulous costumes that stylists had made for their models to wear.
Verity Brooks pix 14-18 from Alter Ego in Colchester let her imagination run wild with both the hair and dress she made for the Avant Garde category. The stunning frock was made up of old newspapers, tin cans and bits of rubbish putting the spotlight on recyclable materials.
Salon owner Nick Mitchell pix 23-26 said: “Competitions like this are so important because they really fire up the imagination of our team. It drives them to achieve the very best they can and that hugely benefits their work.
“Even if they do not win, the experience of taking part in so much fun that it inspires them to enter again and try to achieve more.”
That was a view echoed by Lorraine Smith who has been running the David John salon in Chelmsford for just four months.
“When I came on board, the staff were not taking part in any of these kind of events and we really encouraged them to get involved,” she said. “Being part of the competition really gives them confidence and there has been a real buzz in the salon in the run up to the finals.”
AND THE OVERALL WINNERS ARE…………….
Commercial Category: Amelia Fry from Spargo, Brentwood.
Amelia Fry was delighted to be named an overall winner as it was the first time she had ever entered the competition.
She reckons her rock chick look is a truly commercial look and represents how a lot of younger clients want to wear their hair.
She added: “As trainee stylists it’s great to see more clients being adventurous with their hair so we get to do more creative work everyday!”
Prom Category: Sarah Marks, HOB, Whetstone
A delighted Sarah could not believe her success because she had never entered a hairdressing competition before! She loved taking part in the event and her win has inspired her to put herself forward for more competitions and show work.
Afro Caribbean Category: Vicky Garnish, Secrets, Wickford
Vicky chose the Afro Caribbean category because her friend and model Becca Foxwell, who is of Filipino origin, has poker straight hair.
She added: “I love pushing the boundaries and trying to create a curly look on Becca’s hair was a real challenge which I loved.”
Her success has made Vicky keen to work with more hair types and textures and she believes it will make her a more versatile hairdresser.
Men’s Image Category: Chantelle Hendrickson, Spargo, Brentwood
Winning this category in 2011 meant talented Chantelle has enjoyed three wins in a row in this competition. As she loves barbering, the Men’s category was a natural choice and the stunning result showcased her skill and creativity.
Latest Fashion Category: Dominique Rigby, The Painted Lady, Shoreditch
It was more than a case of beginners luck for Dominique Rigby. While entering the competition for the first time, Dominique managed to stay very focused and produced a stunning look modelled by her boss Belinda Hay. Her style harked back to the chic era of the late 1940’s complete with hair rolls and it is a look that is right on-trend now.
Avant Garde Category: Chantelle Hendrickson, Spargo. Brentwood
A second category win for Chantelle Hendrickson literally left the young stylist speechless! She admitted the bold hair and striking costume she had created for her model involved hours of hard work.
Her delighted boss Ian Marshall added: “We are so thrilled for Chantelle and all the rest of the team who have, once again done so well in the competition. We are passionate about training and that includes working on shoots and live shows.”
THE FUTURE OF HAIRDRESSING IS BRIGHT
LEGENDARY hairdresser Tony Rizzo, a judge in this year’s competition, declared the future of British hairdressing to be brighter than ever having seen the amazing live show.
After presenting each regional and overall winner with a trophy, a pair of Tondeo scissors and pictures of their winning entries, Tony then had the difficult job of choosing the first time recipient of the Joshua Galvin Cup.
The Cup was awarded to someone whose work was deemed outstanding but, Tony also had in mind when presenting the award the kind of hairdressing that inspired the late, great Joshua Galvin.
He said: “Joshua always admired hair that was both unique and simple. I am presenting the Joshua Galvin Cup to Sarah Marks because her chignon was simply beautiful.”
Receiving the Cup was the highlight of a very exciting day for the young stylist from HOB in Whetstone. She had already been named overall winner in the Prom category and was amazed to be chosen to receive the Cup. She also won two tickets to the Alternative Hair Show, which was started by Tony Rizzo, and a meal for two before the show at the Royal Albert Hall.
She added: “The whole experience has been amazing and I never expected to enjoy so much success in my first ever competition.”
I’m sure we are going to get quite used to hearing the name Sarah Marks from now on!
Joshua Galvin & Central Hairdressing Academy are now recruiting hairdressing assessors and tutors.
